A Definitive Ranking of The USC Village Accent Walls

By: Gracie Silberman

LOS ANGELES, CA-  As we get closer to the LA 2028 Olympics, and thus The Village’s true purpose finally coming to fruition, it’s the perfect time to revisit 2017 when designers decided to punish not only journalists from around the world but also the students who pay $100,000 a year by adding a splash of color to their wonderful dorm walls. As both a student living in these rooms and a friend to other residents around, I have all the qualifications necessary to rank the dreaded Accent Walls.

4. Cale and Irani – Green: Not even brat summer could save this color. This putrid green is even worse than a freshman after their first week of dirties and satellites. I genuinely think I would pay the damage fee just to paint over it. Does this color have any association with USC? What was the thought process? Did Sherwin-Williams have a bunch lying around? Is there some research study that shows this is calming or something? Did they check to make sure that research study wasn’t an April Fools Day prank? Miss me with that bullshit.

3. Nemirovsky – Yellow: It’s literally fine.

2. Cowlings/Ilium/McCarthy – Orange: Sorry Nemmy, Cowlings ranked higher than you for one reason and one reason only: Taylor Swift. Her choice theming of her new album, Life of a Showgirl, being orange and glittery single handedly made me come around to this wall color. It’s also Hunger Games Hottie Peeta Mellark’s favorite color… And I may be biased because it’s my apartment and I’m trying to convince myself it’s pretty.

1. McMorrow – Blueish Turquoise: Without a doubt this is the best color. McMorrow deserves it just because it’s easily the most forgettable dorm. I guess they get one win. This is peak room color in terms of an 11 year old whose mom told them they can finally choose to paint their bedroom walls. Will they regret it by 16? Probably. But it’s nostalgic, and at least somewhat approachable. The best part about it: you almost forget it’s even there. At the end of the day, I appreciate the sentiment in all four accent walls, even if they look straight out of PeeWee’s Playhouse.
